Tornado Warning Procedures
If a tornado warning is issued, proceed immediately to a designated shelter or a safe area on the lowest floor of a sturdy building. Avoid windows, doors, and exterior walls. Do not pull fire alarms. Remain indoors and off the road; vehicles and open areas are highly unsafe. SMCC Police Department will activate emergency sirens and send a LiveSafe alert. Wait for an 'all clear' from authorities before leaving your shelter and stay updated for additional watches or warnings.
Hazardous Material Incident Response
If you witness or are involved in a hazardous material incident, immediately report it to the SMCC Police Department at (601) 551-3838. Provide the exact location, details of exposure, injuries, and the nature of the substance involved. If exposed, leave the immediate area promptly and avoid contaminating others. Isolate yourself if contaminated to limit exposure.
Severe Weather Siren Activation
The severe weather siren on campus is connected to the Pike County Civil Defense Warning Siren Network. A solid tone indicates a tornado warning, while a wavering tone indicates a severe thunderstorm warning. When the siren is activated, consult a weather radio or other media for specific information. Remain in shelter until the 'all clear' is given.
